As we all know, there are many different types of yarn. Gossamer to thick fibres, smooth to fluffy, plain to eye-catching yarns, natural fibres, synthetic fibres or mixed fibres. The individual yarns also differ in price, of course. No wonder the choice is sometimes difficult.

It is important to ask yourself what the yarn will be used for. Are you crocheting an intricate project that requires a fine cotton yarn? Are you crocheting a warm scarf for which you need thick yarn? Do you want to make a garment that requires high-tenacity yarn? If you have answered these questions in advance, it will be easier for you to choose the right yarn.

If you are a beginner, don't start directly with a crochet project that is too difficult, for example a jumper. Potholders, among other things, are suitable for beginners. It is important to learn the basic stitches first before crocheting according to instructions with a difficulty level of medium to difficult. This will save you frustration and tedious looking up of different stitches, which is only demotivating in the end.

Unfortunately, counting stitches is often neglected. For some crochet projects it is indeed essential to count the stitches. Especially when the number of stitches per row does not change, the temptation to stop counting is great. However, it can still happen that a stitch is missed. If this is not noticed, the crochet work is suddenly much too narrow at the top, for example.

Another small mistake that is much less trouble if you avoid it is sewing the thread in crochet. Because if the thread is not sewn properly at the beginning, end or when changing yarn, the crochet work can come undone again. If this happens after hours of work, and you suddenly have a rubbed-up pile in front of you, it is really annoying. It is important to tighten the thread evenly when sewing and not to put all the stitches in one place. This can lead to unsightly knots.

One last tip that you should definitely pay attention to is the tensioning of your project. It is not uncommon for crochet to end up warped or rippled, for example if the yarn was changed in between or the thread tension was no longer even. This problem can easily be solved by stretching and bringing the crochet project into shape.

But what does stretching actually mean? Quite simple:
Spread out the crochet project and fix it to a base in the desired shape with pins.

Moisten crochet and allow to dry when stretched or iron.
Following these little tips will save you a lot of trouble and nerves and the anticipation of the next project will be all the greater.

We hope you enjoy crocheting.
