Crochet Christmas cat appliqué
Not yet found the perfect outfit for the next Christmas party? With this Christmas cat, every sweater can easily be transformed into a Christmas sweater.
The Christmas cat crochet applique can be crocheted perfectly with leftover yarn and then attached to the appropriate top with a brooch or thread. Inga Borges' instructions are also a good upcycling project for discarded tops.
- Leftover yarn (100% cotton, 125m/50g), in light gray, red, white, gold yellow, old rose, black, and dark blue.
- Crochet hook 2.5 mm

- 3rd row: sc in the following st, sc 21, 2 sc in the following st [= 25 sts].
- 4th row: sc in the following st, sc 23, 2 sc in the following st [= 27 sts].
- 5th row sc in the following st, sc 25, 2 sc in the following st [= 29 sts].
- 6th row sc 1 in each st [= 29 sts].
- 7th row: 2 sc in the following st, sc 27, 2 sc in the following st [= 31 sts].
8th-16th row sc 1 in each st [= 31 sts in every r].
- 17th row: sc2tog, sc 27, sc2 tog [= 29 sts].
18th-19th row: sc 1 in each st [= 29 sts].
- 20th row: sc2tog, sc 25, sc2tog [= 27 sts].
- 21st row: sc 1 in each st [= 27 sts].
- 22nd row: sc2tog, 23 sc, sc2tog [= 25 sts].
Let's start the ear:
- 23rd row: sc 7, ch 1, slip the remaining sts of the row, turn.
- 24th row: sc2tog, sc 3, sc2tog [= 5 sts].
- 25th row: sc 1 in each st [= 5 sts].
- 26th row: sc2tog, sc 1, sc2tog [= 3 sts].
- 27th row: sc 1, sc2tog [= 2 sts].
- 28th row: dec [= 1 st].
Cut and sew the thread. Crochet around the head with single crochet stitches. Start with a standing single crochet in the beginning chain. Crochet 3 single crochet stitches into the tip of the ear.
Crochet head (light grey)

- 22nd row: sc2tog, 23 sc, sc2tog [= 25 sts].
Let's start the ear:
- 23rd row: sc 7, ch 1, slip the remaining sts of the row, turn.

- 25th row: sc 1 in each st [= 5 sts].
- 26th row: sc2tog, sc 1, sc2tog [= 3 sts].

Cut and sew the thread. Crochet around the head with single crochet stitches. Start with a standing single crochet in the beginning chain. Crochet 3 single crochet stitches into the tip of the ear.
Crochet Inner Ear (in Old Rose)
Crochet in R. Chain 4 and crochet from the 2nd chain from the hook.
- 1st row: sc 3 [= 3 sts].
- 2nd row: sc2tog, sc 1 [= 2 sts].
- 3rd row: dec [= 1 st].
Cut off yarn and weave in ends. Crochet around the inner ear with a round of single crochet stitches. Make 2 single crochet stitches in each of the bottom two corners (R 1) and 3 single crochet stitches in the tip (R 3).
Crocheting Cheeks (2x in Old Rose)
Crochet in a continuous round.
- 1st round: 7 sc into a magic ring.
- 2nd round: 7 x (1 inc) [= 14 sts].
- 3rd round: sc 1 in each st [= 14 sts].
Cut yarn and weave in ends .
Crochet nose (in black)
Ch 5 and crochet from the 2nd chain from the hook.
- 1st row: sc 4 [= 4 sts].
- 2nd row: 2 x dec [= 2 sts].
- 3rd row: dec [= 1 st].
Cut the yarn and weave in ends. Work single crochet stitches around the nose. Make 2 single crochet stitches in each corner.
Eye (in gold yellow)
Work in rows. Ch 2.
- 1st row: 1 M zun. [2]
- 2nd row: 2 x 2 sc in nect st [= 4 sts].
3rd-4th row: sc 4 [= 4 sts].
- 5th row 2 x dec [= 2 sts].
- 6th row dec [= 1 st].
Cut the thread and weave in ends. Work a round of single crochet stitches around the eye. Then, embroider 4 straight stitches in the middle with black. Embroider a small point of light in the upper right corner of the straight stitches with white.
Eye (in gold yellow)
Work in rows. Ch 2.
- 1st row: 1 M zun. [2]
- 2nd row: 2 x 2 sc in nect st [= 4 sts].
3rd-4th row: sc 4 [= 4 sts].
- 5th row 2 x dec [= 2 sts].
- 6th row dec [= 1 st].
Cut the thread and weave in ends. Work a round of single crochet stitches around the eye. Then, embroider 4 straight stitches in the middle with black. Embroider a small point of light in the upper right corner of the straight stitches with white.
Hat (in red)
Work in rows. Ch 19 and start in the 2nd ch from hook.
1st-4th row: sc 18.
- 5th row sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog [= 16 sts].
- 6th row sc 1 in every st [= 16 sts].
- 7th row: sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog [= 14 sts].
- 8th row: sc 12, sc2tog [= 13 sts].
9th-10th row: 13 sc.
- 11th row: sc2tog, sc 10, 2 sc in last st [= 13 sts].

Cut yarn and weave in ends. Crochet sc around the hat. Start with a standing sc in the beginning ch. Crochet 3 sc in the tip of the hat in the course of the rnd (11th st of the 15th row).
Hat (in red)
Work in rows. Ch 19 and start in the 2nd ch from hook.
1st-4th row: sc 18.
- 5th row sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog [= 16 sts].
- 6th row sc 1 in every st [= 16 sts].
- 7th row: sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog [= 14 sts].
- 8th row: sc 12, sc2tog [= 13 sts].
9th-10th row: 13 sc.
- 11th row: sc2tog, sc 10, 2 sc in last st [= 13 sts].
- 12th row: sc 11, sc2tog [= 12 sts].
- 13th row: sc2tog, sc 9, 2 sc in last st [= 12 sts].
- 12th row: 2 sc in fist st, sc 7, 2 x sc2tog [= 11 sts].

Cut yarn and weave in ends. Crochet sc around the hat. Start with a standing sc in the beginning ch. Crochet 3 sc in the tip of the hat in the course of the rnd (11th st of the 15th row).
Hem (in white)
Work in rows. Ch 21 and start in 2nd ch from hook.
1st-3rd row: sc 1 in every ch [= 20 sts].
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Work one rnd of sc around, with 2 sc in each corner.
Crochet bells (in golden yellow)
Crochet in a continuous round.
- 1st round: Work 6 sc in a magic ring.
- 2nd round: 6 x 2 sc in next st [= 12 sts].
- 3rd round: sc 1 in every st [= 12 sts].
Cut yarn and weave in ends .
Bow (in dark blue)
Work in rows. Ch 7 and start in 2nd ch from hook.
1st-3rd row: sc 1 in every ch [= 6 sts].
- 4th row: dec, sc 2, dec [= 4 sts].
- 5th row 2 x sc2tog [= 2 sts].
- 6th row 2 x 2 sc in nect st [= 4 sts].
- 7th row: 2 sc in frist st, sc 2, 2 sc in last st [= 6 sts].
8th-10th row: sc 1 in every ch [= 6 sts].
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Work a round of sc around the bow. Make 2 sc in every corner. Make a long tail (30cm, 11.8in) and wind it around the middle of the bow. Secure it at the back.
Bow (in dark blue)
Work in rows. Ch 7 and start in 2nd ch from hook.
1st-3rd row: sc 1 in every ch [= 6 sts].
- 4th row: dec, sc 2, dec [= 4 sts].
- 5th row 2 x sc2tog [= 2 sts].
- 6th row 2 x 2 sc in nect st [= 4 sts].
- 7th row: 2 sc in frist st, sc 2, 2 sc in last st [= 6 sts].
8th-10th row: sc 1 in every ch [= 6 sts].
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Work a round of sc around the bow. Make 2 sc in every corner. Make a long tail (30cm, 11.8in) and wind it around the middle of the bow. Secure it at the back.
Finishing
Face
Use the same yarn in the matching color that you used for crocheting to sew on. Sew the nose at the height of the 11th row, in the center of the head. Extend the nose downwards with 2 backstitches over a length of 3 rows. Attach the finished eye below the 17th row of the head, below the ear. Sew the inner ear in the middle of the ear. Attach the cheeks to the right and left of the nose at the height of the 11th row. The distance from the nose is 4 stitches. On the opposite side of the eye, embroider a downward backstitch over a width of 7 stitches for the second eye. Finally, embroider 3 slanted backstitches on each side of the nose with black thread for the whiskers.
Christmas hat
Sew the hem to the bottom edge of the hat. Sew the bell to the top of the hat. Sew the finished Christmas hat slightly angled to the left side of the head.
Bow
Sew the bow to the bottom center of the head.
Finishing
Face
Use the same yarn in the matching color that you used for crocheting to sew on. Sew the nose at the height of the 11th row, in the center of the head.
