Men’s cardigan
Stay stylish throughout the cold season! This cardigan made from super-soft merino wool is knitted from the bottom up – easy in individual pieces. With its casual cut and pockets, it is perfect for winter and spring. Instructions from Lang Yarns.

- Langyarns Merino+ (90 m / 50 g)
- addi circular needle addiNovel 4 mm/4,5 mm (US #6-7)
- Wool needle

Gauge:
- 18 sts and 38 r = 10 × 10 cm (4x4")
- with needle size 4-4,5 mm
Dimensions:
- Size: S / M / L / XL
- Bust size: 106/114/122/130 cm (41¾”/45”/48”/51¼”)
- Length: 72 cm (28¼”)
Yarn consumption:
- 1000/1050/1150/1250 g = 20/21/23/25 balls
Men’s cardigan
Pattern
Pattern I (Bündchenmuster): Nadel 4 mm
- 1 edge st, *p1, k2, p1*, rep from * to *, ending with 1 edge st (= k2, p2 rib). On subsequent rows work the sts as they appear.
Muster II (Halbpatent): Nadel 4,5 mm
- half brioche rib, odd no. of sts: Note: work brioche sts (into the row below) on WS rows.
- 1. R Vorders: 1 Rdm, *1 M li, 1 M re*, von * zu * stets wdh, enden mit 1 M
- Row 1, RS: 1 edge st, *p1, k1*, rep from * to *, ending with p1, 1 edge st
- Slip the edge st at beg of each row, knit the edge st at end of row.
Muster III (Halbpatent): Nadel 4,5 mm
- half brioche rib, odd no. of sts: Note: work brioche sts (into the row below) on RS rows.
- Row 1, RS: 1 edge st, *p1, 1 brioche st*, rep from * to *, ending with p1, 1 edge st. Row 2, WS: 1 edge st, *k1, p1*, rep from * to *, ending with k1, 1 edge st.
- Slip the edge st at beg of each row, knit the edge st at end of row.
Step 1
Back
- Cast on 130/138/146/154 sts with 4mm needles.
- Knit in pattern I.
- After 6 cm (2¼“) change to 4.5mm needles, purl 1 WS row and dec 33/33/35/35 sts evenly over the row = 97/105/111/119 sts.
- Now work in pattern II.
Shape armholes:
- When back measures 47/46/45/43 cm (18½“/18“/17¾“/17“) cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec, dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row twice (see tip 1).
- Now work in pattern III and continue fully fashioned dec, dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row 2/3/3/4 times (see tip 2) = 77/81/87/91 sts.
Shape shoulders:
- When armhole measures 23/24/25/27 cm (9”/9½”/10”/10¾”) cast off at armhole edges on every other row, as foll: 4 sts twice + 5 sts 3 times / 5 sts 5 times / 5 sts 3 times + 6 sts twice / 5 sts once + 6 sts 4 times.
Neckline:
- When armhole measures 23/24/25/27 cm (9”/9½”/10”/10¾”) cast off at armhole edges on every other row, as foll: 4 sts twice + 5 sts 3 times / 5 sts 5 times / 5 sts 3 times + 6 sts twice / 5 sts once + 6 sts 4 times.
Tip 1: Fully fashioned dec (Pattern II, armhole and V-neck):
- Right edge = 1 edge st, p1, k1, p1, k3tog.
- Left edge = work to last 7 sts, sl1, k2tog, psso, p1, k1, p1, 1 edge st.
Tip 2: Fully fashioned dec (Pattern III, armhole and V-neck):
- Right edge = 1 edge st, p1, 1 brioche st, p1, k3tog working into the row below.
- Left edge = work to last 7 sts, sl1, k2tog working into the row below, psso, p1, 1 brioche st, p1, 1 edge st.
Step 1
Back
- Cast on 130/138/146/154 sts with 4mm needles.
- Knit in pattern I.
- After 6 cm (2¼“) change to 4.5mm needles, purl 1 WS row and dec 33/33/35/35 sts evenly over the row = 97/105/111/119 sts.
- Now work in pattern II.
Shape armholes:
- When back measures 47/46/45/43 cm (18½“/18“/17¾“/17“) cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec, dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row twice (see tip 1).
- Now work in pattern III and continue fully fashioned dec, dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row 2/3/3/4 times (see tip 2) = 77/81/87/91 sts.
Shape shoulders:

Tip 1: Fully fashioned dec (Pattern II, armhole and V-neck):
- Right edge = 1 edge st, p1, k1, p1, k3tog.
- Left edge = work to last 7 sts, sl1, k2tog, psso, p1, k1, p1, 1 edge st.
Tip 2: Fully fashioned dec (Pattern III, armhole and V-neck):
- Right edge = 1 edge st, p1, 1 brioche st, p1, k3tog working into the row below.
- Left edge = work to last 7 sts, sl1, k2tog working into the row below, psso, p1, 1 brioche st, p1, 1 edge st.
Step 3
Left front
- Cast on 66/70/74/78 sts with 4mm needles.
- Knit in pattern I.
- After 6 cm (2¼“) change to 4.5mm needles, purl 1 WS row and dec 17 sts evenly over the row = 49/53/57/61 sts.
- Now work in pattern II.
At 23 cm (9“) from the cast-on edge,
- cast off for top of pocket cast off sts 11 – 41 / 13 – 43 / 15 – 45 / 17 – 47 and leave the rest of the sts.
- For the inner pocket on WS, pick up the same 31 sts above the rib border and knit in pattern II for 17 cm (6¾”).
- For the pocket flap cast on 31 sts with 4.5mm needles and knit in pattern II for 7 cm (2¾”).
- Resume knitting over all sts, working in pattern II, one by one knit tog sts of pocket flap and inner pocket and insert these sts in place of the cast-off sts.
V-neck:
- When front measures 42 cm (16½“) work fully fashioned dec at the left edge, dec 2 sts on every 12th row 8 times / every 12th row 8 times / alt every 10th + 12th row 9 times / alt every 10th + 12th row 9 times (see tips 1 and 2, according to pattern).
armhole and shoulder
- Work armhole and shoulder at the right edge to match the back.
Step 3
Left front
- Cast on 66/70/74/78 sts with 4mm needles.
- Knit in pattern I.
- After 6 cm (2¼“) change to 4.5mm needles, purl 1 WS row and dec 17 sts evenly over the row = 49/53/57/61 sts.
- Now work in pattern II.
At 23 cm (9“) from the cast-on edge,
- cast off for top of pocket cast off sts 11 – 41 / 13 – 43 / 15 – 45 / 17 – 47 and leave the rest of the sts.
- For the inner pocket on WS, pick up the same 31 sts above the rib border and knit in pattern II for 17 cm (6¾”).
- For the pocket flap cast on 31 sts with 4.5mm needles and knit in pattern II for 7 cm (2¾”).
- Resume knitting over all sts, working in pattern II, one by one knit tog sts of pocket flap and inner pocket and insert these sts in place of the cast-off sts.
V-neck:
- When front measures 42 cm (16½“) work fully fashioned dec at the left edge, dec 2 sts on every 12th row 8 times / every 12th row 8 times / alt every 10th + 12th row 9 times / alt every 10th + 12th row 9 times (see tips 1 and 2, according to pattern).
armhole and shoulder
- Work armhole and shoulder at the right edge to match the back.
Step 4
Right front
Knit to mirror the left front.
Sleves:
- Cast on 58/62/66/70 sts with 4mm needles.
- Knit in pattern I.
- After 6 cm (2¼“) change to 4.5mm needles, purl 1 WS row and dec 13/13/13/11 sts evenly over the row = 45/49/53/59 sts.
- Continue in pattern III.
- For shaping, inc 1 st at each end of every 14th row 10 times = 65/69/73/79 sts. Incorporate the new sts into pattern III.
Sleeve cap:
- When sleeve measures 50 cm (19¾”) cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec, dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row 8 times (see tip 2)
- and cast off again at each end of every other row: cast off 1 st 3/3/5/5 times, 2 sts twice and 3 sts once.
- Loosely cast off rem sts when sleeve cap reaches a length of 17/17/18/18 cm (6¾”/6¾”/7”/7”).
Part 5
Finishing the men's cardigan
- Close the seams
Closing band
- With circular needle, pick up 366/366/370/370 sts (from lower edge to V-neck = 91 sts each side, V-neck = 70 sts each side, back = 44/44/48/48 sts).
- Knit in pattern I, beginning with 1 edge st, p1, k2 and ending in reverse.
- When closing band measures 1 cm (½“) make 5 buttonholes in the left closing band, as foll: work 277/277/281/281 sts, cast off the next 3 sts without working the yarn and cast on 3 new sts in their place.
- Rep buttonhole in this way 4 more times with 17 sts in between, work to end of row.
- When closing band measures 3.5 cm (1¼“) cast off all sts, pattern-wise.
- Set in sleeves. Sew on buttons.
Part 5
Finishing the men's cardigan
- Close the seams
