This is how it works:
Knitting a Baby-Balaklava
- Cast on 82 sts with 2 strands of yarn and US 8 (5 mm) needles.
-
Distribute sts evenly over the needles and join to work in the round, place a marker for beginning of rnd and work in rib: * k1, p1, rep from * around.
-
Continue working until ribbing measures 3¼“ (8 cm), then leave the last 15 sts on a holder for the face opening.
From now on you will be working garter st in rows:
- Cast on 1 st at the beginning and end of your row for edge sts and continue with 69 sts.
-
When your work measures about 8¼” (21 cm) from the cast-on edge, work 1 row as follows: bind off 22 sts, k25, bind off 22 sts.
-
Continue over the rem 25 sts, work in garter st for about 4¼” (11 cm), then bind off.
Finishing:
- Close the seams.
Border for face opening:
- Border for face opening: With the circular needle, pick up 100 sts around teh front opening, beginning with the sts from the holder. Close to work in the round, place a marker for beginning of rnd and work in rib: * k1, p1, rep from * around.
-
Loosely bind off all sts when border measures about 1¼“ (3 cm), use the Italian method if preferred, for greater elasticity. Weave in ends. Block as desired.
