Crochet summer hat
An individual summer hat in the right size protects your head from the sun and is a beautiful accessory. Made from strong yarn, it is quick to crochet and keeps its shape well.

Table of contents
What you need:
- Woolly Hugs Rope (140m/ 200g// 152yd/ 7oz) almost 2 balls
-
addi crochet hook 4,5 mm
-
Centimetre measure
-
Scissors
Size:
- The size is individually adjusted to the diameter of the head.
Gauge yarn Rope:
- 18 sts x 12r = 10x10 cm/4x4" (needle 6-8 mm/ US #J-L)
Abbreviations
- MR = Magic ring
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase = 2 sc in one stitch
- Rd = Round
- st/s = stitch/es
Step 1
Size calculation
To determine the correct size for the hat, calculate the diameter of the initial circle using the following formula:
Diameter = head circumference : pi (3.14) - 2 cm
Example: for a head circumference of 57 cm
57 cm : 3.14 - 2 cm = 16.1 cm diameter
Tip: The stitches are doubled at the beginning until the crocheted circle reaches the calculated diameter. Then continue crocheting in even rounds, without increases, to reach the desired height.
Step 2
Crochet a summer hat – step by step
Start at the top of the head and continue increasing until you reach the circumference of the head:
- Rd 1: make 6 single crochets (sc) in a magic ring
- Rd 2: inc every stitch [= 12 sts]
- Rd 3: (1 sc, 1 increase (inc)) × 6 [= 18 sts]
- Rd 4: (1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc) × 6 [= 24 sts]
- Rd 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 30 sts]
- Rd 6: (2 sc, 1 inc, 2 sc) × 6 [=36 sts]
- Rd 7: (5 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 42 sts]
- Rd 8: (3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc) × 6 [48 sts]
- Rd 9: (7 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 54 sts]
- Rd 10: (4 sc, 1 inc, 4 sc) × 6 [= 60 sts]
- Rd 11: (9 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 66 sts]
- Rd 12: (5 sc, 1 inc, 5 sc) × 6 [= 72 sts]
If the diameter has not yet been reached, continue doubling stitches. Then continue with the head piece.
Crochet rounds without increase:
- Rd 13–23: 1 sc in each stitch

Crochet the brim
Further construction with increases:
- Rd 24: (11 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [78 sts]
-
Rd 25–27: 1 sc in each st
-
Rd 28: (6 sc, 1 inc, 6 sc) × 6 [= 84 sts]

Rd 29: 1 sc in each st

-
Rd 33: (15 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 102 sts]
-
Rd 34: (8 sc, 1 inc, 8 sc) × 6 [= 108 sc]
-
Rd 35: (17 sc, 1 inc) × 6 [= 114 sc]

Rd 40: (11 sc, 1 inc, 11 sc) × 6 [= 144 sc]

Final edge
- Insert into the stitch and pick up the yarn (2 loops on the hook).
-
Twist both loops on the hook by rotating the crochet hook slightly.
-
Pick up the working yarn and pull it through the twisted loops.
-
Repeat until the entire edge is finished.
