The history of knitting
From economy knitting to a time when knitting means more: yoga for the soul
The view of the knitting craft and hobbie has changed over time. We give a small overview.
It is not possible to determine exactly when and where the first knitting in human history originated. However, it is assumed that circular knitting with several needles was already developed around 1400. By the way, did you know that knitting was initially an occupation for men only, and for a long time it was forbidden to women? Then later it was considered a classic women’s work.
The history of knitting began with the growing popularity of warming socks made of wool. A center of knitting soon established itself in Great Britain, where wool was processed on a large scale and then supplied to the whole of Europe.
Lace Pattern and Bead Knitting
During the Biedermeier period, lace patterns and bead knitting experienced high popularity, which was applied to baby hoods, home accessories, bags and pouches or to decorate stockings.
At some point in the history of knitting, women took the helm in industrial production, before later the invention of the knitting machine made a lot of manual labor obsolete.

Accord-knitting
The so-called piecework knitting was in great demand during the two world wars. The priority was to quickly produce warming clothes for soldiers and the population, without frills and patterns.
After this time, handmade garments became more colorful and refined in the knitting technique, however, clung to the hobby an old wives’ image.

Growing in popularity again
Nowadays, knitting is becoming increasingly popular again in every age group. Even among young people under the age of 35, this form of needlework is once again in vogue, despite the fact that in this day and age industrially produced knitwear is available in every fashionable shape and color at a generally affordable price.
Knitting has long since ceased to be just an activity for senior citizens.

Yoga for the soul
Knitting today means well-being – yoga for the soul. The balance for the demanding everyday and professional life. Knitting gives healing, relaxing and mediative effect.
Today’s artists are not primarily concerned with making necessary clothing – rather, they want to nurture their own well-being with unusual or even ordinary creations.
For this purpose, they also like to use high-quality and sustainable tools such as the addiNovel or the addiSwing. High quality and pure relaxation in harmony thanks to ergonomics.
The project "Projekt Sinnvoll", whose research we at addi support, is also concerned with the positive effects of handwork. Read also our article “Knitting is better therapy.”
