Knitting toe up socks with addiCraSyTrio (FlexiFlips)

Toe-up socks Socks are knitted from the toe to the cuff. This has the advantage that they can be tried on in between. The shaft can be knitted until the sock wool is used up.
This advantage is especially apparent when you knit both socks in parallel on two pairs of needles – one from the center of the ball and one from the outside.

How it works:

Knitting toe up socks – from the toe to the cuff

Toe-Up Socks are knitted from the toe to the cuff. For experienced sock knitters of a top-down sock – from the cuff to the toe – the switch to the toe-up version requires some rethinking, but provides variety and many new possibilities.
The cuff can be knitted until the sock wool is used up. This advantage is especially apparent when both socks are knit in parallel on two pairs of needles. In this way, the ball can be knitted to the last meter. However, this does not work with every sock wool – especially if the mirror-image pattern is desired for both socks.

Part 1 – Knitting toe up socks

Knitting the toe

The toe always starts the same – with 8 stitches picked up in parallel on two needles.

Take 2 needles and start the cast on (Judy’s Magic Cast On):
  • Cast on 8 stitches (4 on each needle).
  • Round 1: Knit one round.

How the increases are arranged and which pattern will result depends on the sock toe. Simply choose the toe that you prefer. Here we present 2 variations:

Choose the tip you like best.

Knitting the foot

Now the foot part is knitted straight or in the pattern of your choice.

If you want to knit the classic gusset and flap heel, you will need gusset increases. Therefore, the foot is knitted a little shorter.
To do this, knit the gusset increases according to the sock chart at the end of the foot part directly before the heel begins.
If, alternatively, you want to knit the boomerang heel, the foot section can be worked a little longer as indicated in the table.

Tip: Which fese fits the foot best?

The Boomerang Heel is particularly suitable for a flat to medium instep, as the height of the heel cannot be adjusted.

To ensure that the cuff fits properly, it should be knitted in a ripped pattern:

When the leg and cuff have reached the desired length or when the ball is used up after 2 socks, the cuff has to be cast off.
The cuff needs to remain elastic, which is why an elastic bind-off method or Italian bind-off is particularly suitable.
