Knitting GumGum socks with the addiCraSyTrio
GumGum socks are striped socks without transitions, because they are knitted as a spiral without crossing the yarn. This creates colourful socks.
The technique is great for working with sock yarn remnants, as these can always be worked alternately to form rings until the yarns are used up.
GumGum socks can be knitted both toe-up and top-down. The technique is always the same. In these instructions, we explain how to knit Gumgum socks with the addiCraSyTrio.
What are Gumgum socks?
The GumGum technique for knitting socks is a simple way of knitting two-coloured striped socks without transitions. This involves knitting alternate rounds with one of the two colours and then changing the colour without crossing over the yarn.
Depending on your preference, there are several ways to knit the technique. Either colour 1 and then colour 2 are knitted on one needle, or one complete round is knitted in colour 1 and then in colour 2.
The beginner's knitting technique with double pointed needles has become well known, but the sock technique also works excellently on the addiCraSyTrio or as a magic loop on the circular knitting needle. The second technique can even be knitted with the addiSockwonder (mini circular knitting needle).
- Sock needles in the strength matching the yarn
- addiCraSyTrio
- alternatively addiSockwonder
- alternatively addi circular knitting needle (magic loop)
- 4-, 6- or 8-ply sock yarn (100–150 g/ 3.5–5 oz)
- Ruler or measuring tape
- e.g. addiCalibro Needle gauge with rulerv
- Scissors
Range of variants with GumGum
Because the GumGum technique is a simple striped sock, it can be combined well with all forms of cuffs, heels and toes.
All parts of the sock can be knitted in two colours. If you want to contrast the colour of the toe and cuff, you can knit both in just one of the two colours used. More tips on different coloured cuffs, heels and toes below.
This results in countless creative sock variations with which every scrap of sock yarn can be knitted until the last.

The principle of the Gumgum striped sock is a simple and effective sock pattern. And it can be knitted not only with double pointed needles, but also with the addiCraSyTrio consisting of 3 needles.
Thanks to the fewer needle changes in the round, this technique is wonderfully quick and easy. You can find basic instructions for socks with the trio including sock charts for different shoe sizes and yarns here:
Two variants for knitting the Gum-Gum socks:
Top-Down: Knit a cuff
For the gumgum socks, cast on the usual number of stitches for socks (check sock chart). For the variant knitted from the cuff down, the cuff is then knitted as usual - either in one colour or in a two-colour pattern:
-
- Two-colour pattern "Mike Stripe“
- Two-colour "Celtic cuff“
- Single-coloured cuff patterns
For toe-up socks: The GumGum technique can be started directly after the cast-on (or a single-coloured tip can be knitted).
Then it's on to the striped leg. With the trio, the gumgum technique can now be knitted in two different techniques, depending on which is easier for you.
Technique 1 - Alternate both colours
On the first needle:
- On the first trio needle, knit half the round with colour 1 (threads must not cross).
- Im Anschluss wird nochmal auf der ersten Nadel mit with colour 2 .
On the second needle:
- Now knit the next half of the round with colour 1 on the second trio needle.
- The second needle is then also worked with colour 2 .
So two rounds were knitted in parallel with both colours. These steps are repeated continuously.
Technique 2 - One round with each colour
One round with colour 1:
- On the first trio needle, knit in the round with colour 1 (yarns must not cross)
- The round is then completed on the second trio needle, also with colour 1.
One round with colour 2:
- The second colour follows with Color 2 on the first trio needle.
- Knit in the round Color 2 over the second needle
This technique involves knitting a complete round of one colour, followed by a complete round of the second colour. For the seamless GumGum look, the threads of both colours must never be crossed. They only follow each other in a long spiral.
Tip: This variant can really be worked with any knitting needle - even with the addiSockwonder.
Both techniques explained in a video (german):

Collection cuffs, heels and toes
For a colourful variation of socks, parts of the sock can be striped and others knitted in one colour. We have collected many variations for different techniques for you here:
The cuff can be knitted in one colour or in a two-colour pattern:
- Two colour variants:
- Two-colour pattern "Mike Stripe“
- Two-colour "Celtic cuff“
- One colour variants:
Leg and foot can not only be knitted in stockinette stitch. Some patterns produce very beautiful effects in combination with the stripes:
- Two colour sock pattern:
- Broken Seed Muster
- Ribbed knitting
- Lifted knit stitch
The heel is knitted with one of the two colours in any technique:
- Two colour variants:
- One colour variants:
The sock toe can be knitted in two colours until the end (simply continue alternate the colours, even during the decreases) or in a single colour:
