Knitting socks with the addiCraSyTrio
Circular knitting needles, double-pointed needles, sock wonder or would you rather use trios? Here we explain what the different knitting needles look like and how you can find the right ones for knitting socks and what the differences are while knitting.
We start by knitting socks with the addiCraSyTrio (FlexiFlips).
The flexible double pointed needles with only three needles - the addicraSyTrio
The flexible needle set addiCraSyTrio is a revolution in sock knitting. The Trio consists of 3 needles, each with a flexible middle section. 2 needles hold the stitches and the 3rd needle is used to knit. Perfect for small diameters.
So there are only 2 needle changes per round and less need to hold the needle. The flexible middle section means that the needle does not slip out of the sock so easily when knitting. Ideal for beginners and loose knitters. Each needle replaces two needles of a classic double-pointed needle set when knitting with the trios.
Knitting socks with the addiCraSyTrio - for whom are Trios particularly suitable?
- For beginners who do not have much experience with double-pointed needles and knitting socks.
- For loose knitters because the needles do not slip out of the knitted piece so easily due to the flexible middle part.
- For knitting patterns over several stitches - handling is simplified by only two needle changes per round.
- For knitters with hand problems because the long needles that don't slip out of the knitted piece as quickly are easier to grip, even if your hands lack feeling or hurt. Especially the addiCraSyTrio Novel with its structure.
Anyone who has always worked with the Double-pointed needles may or may not find it difficult to make the switch. It varies. It takes one sock to practice, to get used to the handling and posture.

addiCraSyTrio Short – for socks and cuffs
addiCraSyTrio is available in different lengths, either short (21-24 cm) or long (26-30 cm).
The addiCraSyTrio Short and Short Bamboo with a length of 21-24 cm are particularly suitable for knitting socks, baby socks, gloves and cuffs. They are ideal for diameters up to approx. 12 cm.
Also with the addiCraSyTrio Long in lighter needle sizes the Novel and Unicorn needles, socks can also be knitted. Due to the 30 cm length of the needles, they are also suitable for techniques with many stitches distributed on the needles, e.g. for an increase heel, knitting two socks in parallel or for particularly large socks.
The length makes it easy to slip and fit socks while knitting.
For small and medium diameters (e.g. socks - hats)
addiCraSyTrio Long can be used for small diameters such as socks and cuffs as well as for larger diameters such as hats and sleeves etc. The length of 26-30 cm means there is room for more stitches.
The addiCraSyTrio Long are also available for thicker yarns up to 8 mm needle. The length of the needles is well suited for diameters up to approx. 25 cm.
Due to the longer needle tips (125 mm each), every hand finds a good grip here. The long tips hang down a little more while knitting, which can give one knitter a feeling of security, but can also bother lovers of short needle tips.
Creative holding techniques can be a solution here.
For small hands
Thanks to their flexibility, the addiCraSyTrios adapt to the shape of your hand and they will find their place.
For small hands in particular, however, a longer needle can also be unwieldy, e.g. when knitting baby socks.
Therefore, for small hands and small diameters like socks, we recommend the classic addiCraSyTrio Short (metal). It is approx. 21 cm long - each tip measures approx. 85 mm.
For larger works such as beanies, the classic addiCraSyTrio Long made of metal is an intermediate size for small hands - with a total length of 26 cm. The other long versions measure approx. 30 cm.
For large hands
If you need a little more needle in your hand or more space on the needles, the addiCraSyTrio Long is the better choice.
The short tips of the addiCraSyTrio short made from metal (21 cm) may be too short for large hands and thus not fit ideally in the hand. The addiCraSyTrio short made from bamboo are 3 cm longer (24 cm) than the metal version and thus an ideal intermediate size for large hands with small projects like socks.
Even longer and also available in thin strengths for socks are the addiCraSyTrio Novel Long and addiCraSyTrio Unicorn Long each with a total length of 30 cm. This means that the tips, at 125 mm each, are just as long as a classic circular knitting needle tip.
Many knitters do well with this length - whether for socks or sleeves.
For aching hands
Knitting enthusiasts with arthrosis or other disorders of the hands and muscles also benefit, because the Trio needles lie well in the hand, slip away less easily and can thus be held effortlessly.
Our addiNovel knitting needle is characterised by a special feel: The square needles with rounded edges and textured surface ensure good ergonomics while knitting, even under high demands. This massages the hands while knitting and puts less strain on one side.
So why not try out our addiCraSyTrio Novel Long needle with her ergonomic structure?
For tightly knitters
If you knit very tightly and it is difficult to slip your stitches over the needle, we recommend choosing the classic round metal trios.
They are very smooth (so the stitches slip best) and each has a lace tip, which makes it easier to slip a very tight stitches.
Any structure (Unicorn, Novel) or rougher material (bamboo) tends to have an anti-slip effect and makes it more difficult to slide the stitches.
For loose knitters
Do the stitches sometimes slip off the needle too easily? Then you probably knit loosely.
Then we recommend you either go for the bamboo version of our Trio knitting needles (these are very light and pleasantly warm to the touch), or (if you prefer metal or lace tips), choose a Trio needle set with structure, such as Novel or Unicorn. The textured surface tends to be more slip-resistant and the length of the needles ensures that the stitches do not slip off the needle so easily.

Which instructions and techniques can be knitted with the addiCraSyTrio?
Each tutorial and each sock can also be knitted with the Trios instead of double-pointed needles. Whether GumGum technique, two socks simultaneous, heels and toes, increases, etc.
Each trio needle contains the stitches from two needles of two double-pointed needles. The top of the sock is on one needle, the outsole and heel on the other.
Since only two needles need to be distributed per round, the sock is divided into top and bottom - so that the heel is knitted on one needle only while the other needle is at rest and, for example, the increases for the classic toe are knitted on both ends of the trio needles. This way there is no need for counting or marking.
Knitting Toe-Up Socks with the addiCraSyTrio
The Trio needles are ideal for knitting socks starting from the toe, as they make it particularly easy to knit the initial small number of stitches. This way you only need one trio to knit all parts of the sock from start to finish.
Knitting Top-Down Socks from the cuff to the toe with the addiCraSyTrio
The sock knits just as relaxed from cuff to toe on the trio. Simply start with the usual number of stitches, distributed on two needles.
Knitting two socks at once with the addiCraSyTrio
With the extra long "addiCraSyTrioTrio Long" needles (30 cm each) it is also possible to knit two socks at the same time on just one trio. Instead of using a loop, your stitches simply lie on two needles of the trio and are knitted off with the third needle.
Knitting GumGum socks with the addiCraSyTrio
In the gumgum technique, one row at a time is knitted alternately with two colours, so that striped socks are created without transition from a long spiral.
Classically, the technique is knitted on double-pointed needles and one needle is always skipped, but it can be done much more easily. Simply knit a round with colour 1 over both needles and then with colour 2. The only important thing is that you do not cross both yarns at the end of the needle and now simply knit the next round with colour 1 again.

Tips and tricks for knitting with the addiCraSyTrio
Hand position, working and changing needles
When knitting socks with the addiCraSyTrio, there are different ways of holding your hands. The principle applies: "Let the needles fall wherever they want in your hand. You will find a suitable position."
It is important that you always pull the knitted needle so that the stitches in the middle of the needle lie on the flexible cord. This way both tips of the needle have free space to bend and find a place. Learn more in the video..
There are several possible hand positions:
- The back needle is bent with both points upwards and placed between the hands. The front needle tips hang down loosely.
- The back needle is turned with both points down and simply hangs down on the knitting without being held. The front needle tips hang down loosely.
- The tips of the back needle find their place, somewhere between your fingers or palms. The front needle tips hang down loosely.
Some people are bothered by the tips of the front needles hanging down. Then this posture is also possible:
The back needle is turned with both tips down and simply hangs down on the knitted piece without being held. The front needle tips are fixed in the palms of the hands.

Cast on stitches
There are various ways to cast on stitches easily with the addiCraSyTrios and divide them between two needles. Basically, any type of cast-on is possible.
In this video, Sylvie Rasch shows you different ways of casting on stitches and holding the needles in your hand.
Avoid gaps while change the needle
With the addiCraSyTrio needles there are only two changes of needle in the round. To ensure that the transition is not visible later, the back needle tip should always be above the two working needle tips. This makes it possible to pull the thread tight when knitting the first stitch.
Also, when working patterns, make sure that the stitches on the needle ideally always start with a knit stitch.
Tip: If this is not possible due to the pattern, you can also distribute the stitches with a slightly unequal number on both needles in order to always start with a knit stitch.

addiCraSyTrio with lace or basic tips?
Are you more of a lace or basic tip type?
"Basic" stands for our standard needle tips, which are rather rounded and are particularly suitable, for example, if you knit multi-threaded yarns, are a beginner or knit loosely.
With only slightly twisted yarns, the round tips mean there is no danger of accidentally picking "into" the yarn instead of behind it. Especially as a beginner or if you knit particularly loosely, this is especially pleasant while working.
"Lace" stands for particularly long and fine tip, which is especially appreciated when knitting very fine yarns, when knitting several stitches together for sophisticated patterns or by knitters with a tight gauge.
Due to the long narrow shape of the tips, it is easy to insert into a stitch, even if the stitch is tight.
This makes it easy to knit even multi-threaded, with ajour patterns or tight stitches, and there is no danger of not picking up a stitch correctly.
