Knitting socks with a chart

The first thing to decide before you start knitting your socks is if you want to knit your socks classically “top-down” from the cuff to the toe, or “toe-up” from the toe to the cuff. There are different sock charts for both techniques.

What are Toe-Up Socks?

Toe-up socks are knitted from the toe to the cuff. They have the advantage that they can be tried on in between. The leg can be knitted until the sock wool is used up.
This advantage is especially apparent when both socks are knitted in parallel on two pairs of needles – one from the center of the ball, one from the outside. In this way, the ball can be knitted to the last yard. However, this does not work with every sock wool – especially if the mirror-image pattern is desired for both socks.
 
For experienced sock knitters of a top-down sock (= from the cuff to the toe), the switch to the toe-up version requires some rethinking, but provides variety and many new possibilities.
